Role: Theatre Designer

Elevator Arts & Platform Theatre Arts are looking for a freelance theatre/ performance designer to work on their summer project Tempest  with young people at The Hive, Garon Park, Southend-On-Sea.

Tempest is a dynamic & inclusive outdoor performance project for ages 8-19 (& up to 25 for those with learning disabilities) in partnership with Platform Theatre Arts and funded by National Lottery through Arts Council England.

Over six days in August participants will create an immersive, devised & site-specific performance based on Shakespeare’s The Tempest to perform to family, friends & wider community.

  • Initial team meeting - w/c 24th June

    Site visit at The Hive - w/c 8th July

    Production meeting & design sign off - 19th July

    Project delivery - Friday 2nd August, Monday 5 August - Friday 9 August 2024

  • Fee: £1458

    This includes - pre-delivery planning & prep equiv. 2.5 days @£150 per day

    Production meetings & evaluation up to 6 hrs @ £18 per hr

    0.5 day site visit & meeting = £75

    6 days project delivery @ £150 per day = £900

  • Essential:

    • Undergraduate degree in theatre design or visual arts subject or equivalent experience.

    • Good technical/ craft skills.

    • Experience of working with children and young people on participatory arts projects.

    • Experience of working collaboratively within a creative team to create devised work over a short period of time & on a tight budget.

    Desirable:

    • At least two years’ experience of working as a designer or visual artist for performance.

    • Experience of working in performance or visual arts in a site-specific context.

    • Experience of designing for outdoor performance.

    • Deliver high-quality production design in line with the Tempest project’s aims & objectives.

    • Design, source & create scenic elements, props & costume for the final production.

    • Work with the wider creative team & project participants to refine & respond to the young people’s devising process through visual design over the delivery week.

    • Liaise closely with the Creative Team to plan & deliver the design element of the performance devising process.

    • Liaise & collaborate with all members of Tempest Creative Team, as appropriate, during project planning & delivery.

    • Liaise with Elevator Arts in a timely manner to purchase any resources & materials required.

    • Support the provision of pastoral care to Tempest participants where appropriate and inform Elevator Arts of any potential issues.

    • Attend scheduled meetings with Elevator Arts & project partners.

    • Liaise with Elevator Arts to ensure smooth running of Tempest and inform of any potential issues.

    • Liaise with Elevator Arts to complete risk assessments & comply with all Health & Safety measures.

    • Engage fully in the evaluation process.

    • Adhere to Elevator Arts’ Child Protection & Safeguarding policies.

    Tempest will be a free 6 day outdoor performance project for young people taking place at The Hive, Steps Ahead’s outdoor creative & education space at Garon Park, Southend On Sea.

    Participants will create an immersive, devised & site-specific performance based on Shakespeare’s The Tempest to perform to family, friends & wider community.

    Participants will work collaboratively, building creative skills & exploring The Tempest in the natural environment. Creative activities will be inclusive & accessible across the age group and abilities. Young people will be empowered in a safe, outdoor, creative environment to raise their voice and direct the outcome of the project.

    Tempest will encourage increased access & participation in arts activity & allow young people to develop creative & life skills alongside professional artists within our community.

    We will work with two volunteer mentors identified through Platform Theatre Arts’ work experience programme to learn facilitation skills to empower them to support younger participants & provide positive role models. Developing a pathway for those young people to work on future projects with Elevator Arts & Platform Theatre Arts.

    • Facilitating self-reflection and emotional expression, fostering self-awareness and the development of self-regulation skills.

    • Cultivating a sense of belonging and achievement through collaborative efforts and shared accomplishments.

    Through blending theatre making in a natural environment, Tempest will not only enhance individual well-being but also contribute to the creation of a supportive and inclusive community, fostering lasting positive changes for all participants involved.
