Assistant Youth Theatre Director - BLAST Youth Theatre (Southend) & BLAST Youth Theatre (Basildon)

Elevator Arts has two new roles supporting our BLAST Youth Theatre provision in Southend and our new group in Basildon.

We are happy to either employ one person to undertake both roles or employ two people, whatever is most appropriate.

BLAST Youth Theatre is a regular free to attend youth theatre delivering drama sessions for young people aged 8-12.  Set up in Southend in Sept 2021 in partnership with charity Welcome To The UK, BLAST Youth Theatre is open to all but particularly focuses on those with English as an additional language.  We are now excited to expand BLAST to Basildon working with Signpost (Basildon) and Towngate Theatre.

As BLAST Youth Theatre embarks on an exciting new phase we are looking for a creative & motivated Assistant Director passionate about the power of theatre to effect positive social change.

  • BLAST Youth Theatre (SOS) runs every Monday in term time 5.00pm - 6.30pm

    with the new term starting Monday 9th September.

    BLAST Youth Theatre (BAS) will run every Thursday in term time 5.00pm - 6.30pm

    with the new term starting Thursday 26th September (tbc)

  • £52.50 per session (£35 per hour for delivery including planning & preparation)

    Any additional hours required for session delivery, meetings, rehearsal or production period paid at the following rates:

    Hourly rate for session delivery = £35

    Day rate = £100

    Admin hourly rate = £16

  • Essential:

    • Experience of leading or assisting on participatory drama projects with children and young people.

    • Experience of working collaboratively within a creative team to create theatre with young people.

    • Knowledge & experience of implementing Child Protection & Safeguarding policies.

    Desirable:

    • Experience of working on creative projects that support mental health & wellbeing.

    • Experience of working with young people with English as an additional language.

    • Experience of working with spoken word, storytelling, devising, physical theatre &/or other visual theatre techniques.

    • Creative theatre craft skills such as mask or puppet making.

    • Support & assist the Youth Theatre Director to deliver high-quality drama sessions in line with the BLAST Youth Theatre’s aims & objectives.

    • Support provision of pastoral care to all BLAST YT members.

    • Support & collaborate with the Youth Theatre Director & creative team to deliver productions/ performances & sharings.

    • Deputise for the Youth Theatre Director and provide cover in their absence where appropriate.

    • Attend meetings as appropriate with Elevator Arts & project partners. 

    • Liaise with Youth Theatre Director & Elevator Arts to ensure smooth running of BLAST sessions and inform of any potential issues.

    • Engage fully in the evaluation process.

    • Adhere to Elevator Arts’ Child Protection & Safeguarding policies.

    BLAST YT sessions are built around a framework of drama & creative exercises aimed at building trust & confidence so that the young people can explore personal experience, share feelings & ideas & listen to others in a safe & inclusive creative environment.

    Through the sessions young people are encouraged to positively express their emotional responses and be empowered to tell their own story & share their experience.  The activities help develop confidence & build resilience by challenging the young people to try new things in a supportive environment.

    AIMS & OUTCOMES

    • Amplify voices of young people who are newly arrived or first-generation immigrants in Southend.

    • Develop a sense of belonging for participants.

    • Empower & enable them to express their identity & build a positive self-image. 

    • Make connections through sharing feelings & ideas with others. 

    • Build confidence & resilience by being challenged to try new things.

    • Improve English language skills for those with English as an additional language.
