Celebrating the Success of Our Summer Outdoor Drama Project: Tempest

As the sun sets on the summer holidays we reflect on our remarkable week of creativity, collaboration, and sheer dedication that was our summer outdoor drama project in partnership with Platform Theatre Arts, Tempest. Over the course of six days, a passionate team of theatre professionals and an inspiring group of young people came together to create a unique, adapted version of William Shakespeare's The Tempest. The result was nothing short of magical.

Set against the enchanting backdrop of Steps Ahead at Hive Nature School, Garon Park, Southend, this project was more than just a theatre workshop—it was an immersive journey into the world of Shakespeare, reimagined through the eyes of a new generation. The natural beauty of the location served as a living, breathing stage, where the young participants transformed the space into an otherworldly realm of wonder, mystery, and enchantment.

Throughout the week, the group embraced the challenge of creating a promenade theatre experience that was as immersive as it was innovative. They worked tirelessly to incorporate puppetry, soundscapes, and the elements of the natural environment into their performance, bringing Shakespeare's timeless tale of magic, betrayal, and redemption to life.

“This is such an experience for young people. My child has made friends. She has been introduced to a whole new world which she has immersed herself in. Leaders have been inspiring and encouraging. What a wonderful lifelong memory!”

For many of the young participants, this was their first experience with theatre—let alone performing Shakespearean verse. Their commitment to learning and embodying the rich language in such a short amount of time was truly inspiring. Under the guidance of our dedicated team of theatre professionals, these young performers blossomed, gaining confidence and discovering new facets of their creative potential.

I enjoyed the puppetry because I haven’t done it that many times before and I really enjoy making the puppet look alive even though it is an inanimate object.

“I enjoyed acting with my friends because it put me out of my comfort zone.”

I learned new words in English, talking to new people with confidence. I also improved my English and I also learned how to act better. Thank you so much.

The week culminated in two unforgettable performances, where family and friends were invited to witness the fruits of the group's hard work. The energy, enthusiasm, and talent on display left a lasting impression on everyone who attended. It was clear that this experience had not only nurtured a love for the arts but also created a sense of community and shared achievement that will resonate with these young people for years to come.

“It made me feel more confident in speaking out loud. I loved pretending to be characters and emphasising the character’s lines.”

We extend our deepest gratitude to our incredible partners, Platform Theatre Arts and Steps Ahead, whose support and collaboration were integral to the success of this project. A special thank you also goes out to our funders, National Lottery through Arts Council England, for making this unforgettable experience possible.

As we look back on this extraordinary week, we are filled with pride in what was accomplished and excitement for the future. Tempest was more than just a play; it was a testament to the power of the arts to inspire, challenge, and transform. Here's to the next adventure!
